Machiavelli applied to poker

2006-03-23 16:27:40

A new book applies the theories of Machiavelli, the 16th century Italian philosopher and politician, to the poker table.

Machiavellian Poker Strategy, by poker player and author David Apostolico, demonstrates how the mindset advocated in the Prince can be of value to the poker player today.

Referring to Machiavelli's writings on Virtu (a mixture of strength, skills and other abilities), Fortune, Power and Free Will, Apostolico shows how to utilise these ideas to improve a poker player's game at the table and how to take on these values.

The book also emphasises how to adapt Machiavellian theories of Statesmanship and Human Nature – chapters of Apostolico's book – to the poker table, showing how to maintain a personable presence at the table and extract more from your opponents.

Ultimately, Apostolico suggests, poker is similar to the philosophy of Machiavelli because, as in war and politics, the strong leader wins in the long run, Poker News reports.

Machiavellian Poker Strategy is an excellent addition to the discerning poker player, as well as a fascinating journey into the mind of the legendary Italian.
