A Croydon poker player is close to winning a million playing the popular card game after scooping the $125,000 jackpot at the European Open tournament.

Builder Ian Frazer won the UK Poker Open Championship last year, claiming the $500,000 (£286,000) top prize, and has since represented the UK at a number of events.

According to icCroydon, Frazer's total winnings now top £850,000 and he has won a place at the high-profile Poker Million tournament, with a prize pool of $4,120,000 and a $1.2 million jackpot.

The 47-year-old player from Caterham told the Croydon Advertiser last year that he often lost games when he played with his friends and he only learnt to play poker two years ago.

Father-of-three Frazer is continuing to work for building firm Vidette in Croydon, but has treated himself to a Ferrari 360 Spider and luxury vacations.

He said: "Poker is still my hobby and I'm still working for a living. The money has just meant I've cleared all my debts and had a few extras but I haven't gone over-board."

The quarter finals of the Poker Million Tournament will be screened on Sky this June, with the finals taking place in December.
