The world's first National Deaf Poker Tour has taken place at the Trump Taj Mahal Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
The contest for hearing-impaired players was dreamt up by six deaf East Coast poker fans and the tour now plans to hold three big competitions every year.
Around 200 deaf and hearing-impaired poker players are reported to have taken part in the No Limit Texas Hold 'em tournament, which had a $100 buy-in. The prize pool for the event consisted of the remaining cash after the cost of the contest had been covered.
The next contest on the National Deaf Poker Tour is expected to take place in Binion's, Las Vegas, this summer, ahead of the Championship Event of the World Series of Poker. The top player at the end of the year will be crowned Deaf Poker Champion.
In order to overcome communication barriers during the competition in Atlantic City, paper and writing utensils, information on each table and translators were all used.
John Merriman from Cleveland, Ohio, won the inaugural tournament in the National Deaf Poker Tour, scooping the $6,330 top prize.
