Canadian is Poker Player of Year

Gavin Smith, the Canadian poker player, has won one of the biggest accolades in the industry.

He has been named as the Poker Player of the Year 2006. The announcement was made at the World Poker Tour (WPT) championship, which is currently underway at the Bellagio Casino in Las Vegas.

Smith is the current WPT Mirage Poker Showdown champion and recently signed a sponsorship deal with Black Velvet Canadian Whiskey.

On receiving the sponsorship deal, Smith said it would be an "honor" to work with Black Velvet as it was a brand he was very familiar with.

Smith was awarded his title following his consistently good poker play in the last 12 months.
