Poker film praises game

2006-05-05 17:15:00

A film celebrating the game of poker is being produced with funding from an online gaming site, it has been reported.

The film, yet to be named, will be the first to hit cinema screens since Matt Damon's Rounders in 1998. The film will be launched in the summer with "special celebrity events" planned in Las Vegas and Los Angeles.

"Online poker has become such a huge cultural phenomenon," said Aces.com manager Rene Quesada. The firm, which offers poker games online, has offered the movie's producers a sponsorship deal.

"This movie really explores the lifestyle and excitement that poker players dream about. It has it all... beautiful women, exotic locations, suspense, cheating, and winning", he added.

Poker is not a new addition to films – several movies over the ages have tracked the world's love of the game. Other than Rounders in 1998, Mel Gibson and Jody Foster's 1994 film Maverick also showcased the sport.

Earlier movies include Hopalong Cassidy's 1939 movie Sunset Trial, and Gene Autry's poker murder mystery classic Loaded Pistols, filmed in 1948. Hollywood legends such as Warren Beatty and Steve McQueen have also played Poker addicts.
