Online gambling should be regulated as opposed to being outlawed, according to a new industry survey.
A Washington based casino trade group conducted a study which found that half of those questioned said that "as far they know, online betting is legal" while just 19 per cent stated they were aware of the illegalities of online gambling.
Frank Fahrenkopf, president of the American Gaming Association said: "A commission could evaluate whether legislation, regulation and taxation of the internet gaming industry would be a more advisable course than a complete ban on online gambling."
Regulation of the online gaming industry would generate huge amounts of tax revenue, especially given that total industry earnings are believed to be in the region of $11.9 billion in 2005.
The argument concerning the legalization of online gambling in the US has been an ongoing issue in US government.
