Erick Lindgren has been talking about his poker career and what led him from the town of Burney in northern California to the casino tables of Las Vegas.
A highly competitive player, Lindgren was a basketball and football star at high school and won a place on a junior college team in Chico, California, though he ended up finding work as a dealer in Californian casinos and eventually moving to Las Vegas, Nevada, where he discovered poker.
The poker pro is a younger, more aggressive form of player, described in the interview with Poker News as "media and business savvy" and is a firm favourite with poker fans for his charming and open manner away from the tables.
Lindgren took part in his first poker tournament in 2000, winning the $100 limit contest, and he has since dominated the world's poker tables, winning cash in nearly 40 events across a range of disciplines, including the PartyPoker Millions III Limit tournament, the UltimateBet Aruba Poker Classic and the Bellagio Five Star World Poker Classic.
As poker becomes more and more popular both as a casino game and a spectator sport, an increasing number of aggressive, skilled young players like Lindgren are pushing their way in.
The 30-year-old plays poker regularly online and has sponsorship from an internet casino, often playing under his online alias "E-Dog". On his website, he lists his interests as travelling, playing golf and basketball, watching movies.
Named the first official World Poker Tour Player of the Year in 2004, Lindgren has earned around $3.5 million in his career to date and is after a World Series of Poker bracelet this year. He has also written the second book in the WPT book series, Making the Final Table, which examines the approach of a tournament player in the poker arena.
