Robert Varkonyi has succeeded in winning an extreme poker event despite the freezing temperatures.
The winner was forced to run around the table in order to keep warm at the recent Poker Challenge on the frozen Baltic Sea in Kemi, a small town in Finland. The game's players were forced to endure temperatures of around minus 20 degrees Celsius and Varkonyi only succeeded by exchanging his jacket for some chips.
"Whoever came up with the idea had a sick mind," said the 2002 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event champion, speaking to CasinoCity.
"The deal was that if you lost your chips you could rebuy some chips by taking your jacket off and playing in a T-shirt."
"I stayed warm by running around a lot. It was fun; I kept quite warm. It's probably the best exercise I've had all year," he added.
Varkonyi initially started entering WSOP events in 1995 and by 2002 he felt confident enough to play in a single table satellite to the Main event. His wife is also a competent player and won $28,375 at the most recent WSOP Main Event, despite only taking up the game in 2002.
