2006-06-15 15:00:00

The National Poker League (NPL) has commenced in the US, according to reports.

Although the World Series of Poker (WSOP) attracts some of the industry's bigger hitters, the NPL is famous for attracting some of America's youngest poker talent.

Nene Gonzales, NPL president , said in a statement: "Televised tournaments generally require huge bankrolls.

"What we're striving for is to be the poker tournament for players with smaller bankrolls and lots of games. They may even become TV stars in the process."

It began on June 2nd with the Vegas Open at Caesars Palace and is due to be broadcast on US screens throughout the summer on INHD.

Each stage will offer prize money with competitors initially taking part in ten buy-in tables followed by a semi-final heads-up tournament and final table tournament – there will be a $100,000 prize for the final table.
