2006-06-20 11:00:00

James Anderson has given new meaning to the phrase flying Scotsman after the slick young poker player won himself a place at the World Series of Poker (WSOP).

The young poker playing Scot currently resides in New Zealand but will now be traveling to Las Vegas following his big win at the Skycity WSOP Satellite final in Auckland this weekend.

Mr Anderson won the event with an ace and a seven when he was up against Martin Cardno in the final. His opponent only managed an ace and a four and a seven came up in the community cards giving the Scot the win.

The prize package is worth an estimated NZ $40,000 and includes automatic entry into the WSOP, return airfares for two to Las Vegas, accommodation and NZ $10,000 spending money.

David Christian, Auckland's general manager of gaming, said: "It will be one of the greatest experiences of his life, and I wish him all the best at the WSOP. We'll certainly keep a close eye on his progress."
