Stars glad to get through tough Day Ones

2006-08-02 17:00:00

Many of the leading contenders for this year's World Series of Poker (WSOP) have made it through to the second round.

Only 40 per cent of the 8,778 players won through to the next stage, when the competition gets even stiffer and the names become generally more recognisable.

A number of leading female players are through, with Wendeen Eolis, who finished 26th way back in 1986 and Kristy Gazes &ndash who has had three WSOP money finishes &ndash both playing well in their first round heats, reports Poker News.

Annie Duke and Phil Hellmuth have both also progressed to today's second round as have a number of other big names.

However, a number of former WSOP champions failed during the four days of first round action.

TJ Cloutier, Erik Seidel and Chris Moneymaker all fell at the first hurdle, so any disgruntled amateurs who also departed can be assured they are in good company.
