Main Event whittled down to final 9

2006-08-09 18:00:00

After Fred Goldberg was eliminated from the WSOP's Main Event at the Rio in the 37th year of the tour it signalled just the beginning of the end.

Goldberg was awarded a tidy $1 million for his efforts in gaining tenth place but it may have been little consolation for playing at the final table with chip leader Jamie Gold and Allen Cunningham.

Other contestants who almost made it included Kevin Aaronson who took 15th place, William Thorsson who managed 13th and John Magill and Leif Force, who took 12th and 11th respectively.

Cunningham is expected to enter the final with over $17.7 million in chips, while former Hollywood agent Gold will have over $25 million.

"There's only one player out there that was better than I am and that was Allen Cunningham. He's better than anybody else at that table in my opinion," Goldberg told Pokerlistings.

The final of the Main Event will take place in Rio on Thursday and there is a $12 million prize up for grabs.
