WPT has its say

2006-08-29 18:00:00

The World Poker Tour (WPT) has issued a damning response to contract complaints by players.

A number of leading players have claimed that the tournament's contract cuts them off from a series of possibly lucrative business deals.

Chris "Jesus" Ferguson, Phil Gordon, Joseph Hachem and Greg Raymer were among the players who brought legal proceedings against the WPT earlier this year, claiming that the organisation should not be allowed to require participants to waive their rights to their images and names.

The tour's council, Makan Delrahim, has rubbished the claims in court, stating that they are without merit and that the legal action has put the WPT at an unfair disadvantage.

"WPTE denies that it has violated the antitrust laws or engaged in any unlawful conduct whatsoever," Mr Delrahim asserted.

"As will be shown in the course of this litigation, plaintiffs' complaint mis-states the facts regarding WPTE and its relationships with the casinos that host World Poker Tour events and mis-characterises the state of the poker industry."

The case continues.
