Opposition to online poker ban galvanizes

2006-10-18 16:00:00

Online poker sites are uniting against the US government's decision to ban poker in the United States.

According to a poll by television station ABC, people don't think there was a need to ban online gaming and many people have offered suggestions about exemptions and proposals.

Estimates reported by pokernews.com said the restrictions could generate $3.3 billion in revenue to the government in the multi-billion dollar industry.

Poker enthusiasts on pokernews.com are calling on activists to write their congressmen and women to voice "outrage" over the bill, that it infringes on basic civil liberties and must be overturned.

The bill disallows any US bank from taking transactions from online gaming sites, and was passed into law with President Bush's signature last week.

Election day is November 7th in the US to elect their lower-house representatives and experts expect the online poker discussion is expected to take a front seat in electoral debate.
