Poker players advised to stay fit and sharp to stay on top

2006-10-24 16:30:00

Poker might not be a contact sport, but a past champion is confident a certain degree of fitness and stamina is required to dominate at the tables.

Renowned poker champion Daniel Negreanu has a system for winning at the top levels of poker and reported his fitness theories through his column in the Monteray Herald.

The No Limit Hold'em tournaments have very long days over a series of days and a tired eye could kick a competitor out of competition as fast as his first yawn.

Mr Negreanu said there are tricks every player should know to stay alert and poised to win for the length of the tournament, including getting enough sleep, laying low on caffeine and alcohol and taking care not to eat poorly.

"At dinner, don't overeat. I can't tell you how many times I've seen players go broke right after the dinner break because they were lethargic after a large turkey dinner," Mr Negreanu noted.

Other tips to stay in the groove during tournaments are to stay away from people, who can wear players down just by engaging them in conversation, and lay off the fatty foods.
