Jamie Gold, this year's World Series of Poker champion, has denied that he intends to give $6 million to a man he met at the tournament.
Mr Gold now faces a lawsuit from Bruce Crispin Leyser, who says he was promised half of Mr Gold's winnings, and even has a voicemail tape of the agreement.
The eventual champion's $10,000 dollar entry fee was funded by an online casino company on the proviso that he would convince celebrities at the event to wear clothing featuring the casino's logo, Mr Leyser claims. Mr Leyser says he helped with campaigning in return for half of Mr Gold's winnings.
But a court brief filed last week by Mr Gold insists that this was "nothing more than a promise to make a gift", and that his agreement with the casino was based on previous success rather than dependent on securing advertisements.
Mr Gold, a talent agent, says he has represented Hollywood stars such as The Sopranos actor James Gandolfini.
