The race to become the 2006 poker player of the year is almost over, with Michael Mizrachi set to take the crown thanks to the huge lead he holds over his rivals.
Mizrachi has been out in front for virtually the entire year following wins at World Poker Tour (WPT) events in both January and February, with rivals Shannon Starr and Nam Le currently trailing behind.
But the result is not a foregone conclusion just yet, with Starr's recent good performances meaning that he is now less than 1,500 points behind Mizrachi &ndash still a considerable margin, but the first time for months that anyone has been so close.
The Foxwoods World Poker Finals have proved to be a good tournament for Mizrachi thus far, the poker pro having finished in the money and going some way to erasing memories of his disappointing World Series of Poker tournament earlier in the year.
However, with such a healthy lead over his rivals and consistent performances resulting in more than ten finals tables and over $2.5 million already earned this year alone, it seems that 2006 will be a year to remember for the Florida-born player.
