Poker becoming occupation for Canadians

2006-11-08 13:15:00

A new survey has found that poker is crossing the line between recreation and occupation for many Canadians, as the continued attraction of the game entices more and more players.

The Ipsos-Reid market research firm found that four per cent of respondents aged between 18 and 34 believed they could earn a living as a poker player.

The survey focuses on the Ontario province, whose local government has been attempting to ban online gambling, and suggests that the habit will be hard to break for many residents.

"As poker increases in popularity and online accessibility, growing numbers of people are playing the card game more for money and less for recreation," the study by the Responsible Gambling Council found.

The council added that over 30 per cent of 18 to 34-year-olds said they played poker for money, with seven per cent saying they played at least once a week.

Earlier research, from 2002, discovered that almost 20 million Canadians aged 15 and over gambled that year. The increase in prominence of online poker means that figure seems certain to have risen since then.
