Hellmuth hosts charity poker event

2006-11-21 16:06:20

Saturday December 9th will see former World Series of Poker (WSOP) champion Phil Hellmuth host a charity poker tournament in aid of fallen police officers, it has been announced.

Hellmuth, who became the youngest ever WSOP winner when he triumphed in 1989 aged 24, will play in the tournament himself, giving players the opportunity to meet both him and fellow former world champion Jim Bechtel in the competition.

Held at the Fort McDowell Casino near Phoenix, Arizona, the main event is a $1,000 buy-in tournament featuring Hellmuth and Bechtel. Players less inclined to spend big can enter the $200 buy-in event, on which Hellmuth will commentate.

The occasion has been organised in conjunction with the Taser Foundation for Fallen Officers, an organisation which seeks to provide for families of officers who have died while carrying out their job.

"I am waiving any fees I would normally ask for and am looking forward to attending the event and helping in any way I can," Hellmuth commented on his blog.

With revenue going to the Taser Foundation, the tournament offers players a chance to give something back, while at the same time promising the winner a seat at the 2007 World Series of Poker main event.
