2006-12-04 16:36:27

The annual Five Diamond poker tournament has begun in Las Vegas, with players competing for the chance to line up at the World Poker Tour (WPT) season five Doyle Brunson event in ten days' time.

Held in the Bellagio Hotel and Casino, the event may be a preliminary but it is not short on glamour, with big buy-ins and even bigger prizes.

The fifth Five Diamond competition saw the first of its 13 tournaments leading up to the Doyle Brunson showdown won by Kevin Song, who scooped $253,560 as well as a seat in the WPT &ndash worth $25,000.

Big names involved in the series of tournaments, which have buy-ins from $1,500 to $5,000, included WSOP veterans Scotty Nguyen and David Williams.

The Doyle Brunson North American Poker Championship was launched by the man himself in 2004, and features a prize pool of $3 million. Last year's winner Minh Ly took home over $1 million for his efforts, as well as a special gold and diamond bracelet.
