The man behind some of the most advanced gaming technology in the world is to turn his hand to poker, it has been revealed.
Monty Newborn, currently a professor of computer science at McGill University, has written numerous volumes on the science of computerised chess, and oversaw the famous challenge between champion Gary Kasparov and the Deep Blue machine in 1996.
Now Mr Newborn is reportedly keen to turn his hand to poker, along with the Japanese game of Go, in the next stage of his investigation into artificial intelligence.
The elements of luck and bluff may present more difficult challenges for scientists, though those with experience of online poker room bots may think the technology has already gone far enough.
The success of the chess software was confirmed this month as the latest program, named Deep Fritz, beat world champion Vladimir Kramnik in a six game match. The computer was undefeated across all six contests.
