Poker's rapid rise in popularity was underlined today by news that the game is one of the most searched for terms on the internet.
According to internet search engine Lycos, "poker" was the single most popular term in 2006.
Announcing it's Lycos 50 &ndash the top ranked searches of 2006 &ndash the firm revealed poker had usurped traditional favourites such as Pamela Anderson and Paris Hilton, as well as the social networking phenomenon MySpace.
Search activity for poker has steadily climbed in recent years since it first appeared on the list in 2004 at number ten.
Last year the term was the fourth most popular search and it is now the single most popular search term on the popular website.
Lycos said searches for poker soared in the last year, up by 434 per cent on 2005.
