The 2007 World Series of Poker (WSOP) main event will be host to in the region of 2,000 to 12,000 players, a senior tournament official has suggested.

Director of communications at WSOP Gary Thompson gave the estimate in an interview with PocketFives.com, but asserted that recent US legislation was still an unknown quantity with regards to the event.

"We have tried to figure out the landscape of WSOP in 2007. We have a players' advisory committee consisting of several poker professionals who are close to that side of the industry," said Mr Thompson, speaking to the online poker magazine.

"They've come back to us with estimates ranging from 2,000 players in the Main Event to 12,000 players," he confirmed.

Mr Thompson was more confident with regards to recent industry movements, which have this week seen casino giant Harrah's confirm that it had been acquired by two private equity firms.

Harrah's currently owns the rights to the WSOP name and brand, but Mr Thompson was quick to allay fears.

"We don't anticipate any impact whatsoever. We are working diligently right now to make the tournament bigger and better and to expand it globally," he declared.
