A new survey investigating the most popular web applications in the UK has led online poker to come out on top, it has been reported.
The survey by Nielsen/NetRatings assessed the ten most popular applications and adjudged online poker to be the most used in terms of hours spend on the product.
Instant messaging service MSN Messenger was the highest ranked application in terms of number of users, with 14.7 million users in the UK &ndash almost half the UK internet population.
But online poker games took up the most time, with users spending an average of between three and ten hours on the games every month, depending on the software being used.
"One could argue it is poker that has most effectively harnessed the 'always-on' nature of broadband," said Alex Burmaster, European internet analyst at Nielsen/NetRatings.
The application accessed the most times per month was Yahoo Widgets, with web browsers using the software 37 times per month on average.
