Team-based poker event set for launch

2007-01-22 16:08:14

A host of professional and celebrity poker players will compete for 25 US cities in the inaugural PokerBowl, organisers have announced.

The Texas Hold'Em tournament will begin on May 1st in Las Vegas, with representatives from cities across the country facing off against one another.

Tactics employed by different cities seem to be varying wildly, with some holding public trials for players while others recruit famous names and professional players, such as Phil Gordon, who will play for Las Vegas, and David Williams, playing for Texas.

The new format has attracted a number of celebrities, including James Woods, Jennifer Tilly and Jenna Fischer, and seems to have excited even the more hardened players.

"Team poker is a whole new ball game," said professional player Antonio Esfandiari.

The 150 player field will compete for a $1 million first place prize, with the tournament running until May 6th and featuring Northern, Western, Eastern, Southern and California Conferences.
