College gambling a big success

2007-01-25 16:40:47

A student has become an instant millionaire after winning a World Poker Tour (WPT) event, demonstrating the extent to which students at universities across the world are increasingly finding success via their love of poker.

Ryan Daut, of Penn State, took home $1.5 million after winning a tournament in the Bahamas during the Christmas break.

Daut was already a committed online poker player, just one of many now finding their feet in professional tournaments after learning the game on the internet.

And experts suspect that laid back university lifestyles are providing the ideal location in which to learn about poker.

"I make a joke that ... the second-best gambling environment in America is the college dorm. You've got your privacy, you've got your high-speed internet, you have independence from a parent, you probably now have some credit card money. ... It's like a little mini casino right in your laptop," said University of Minnesota professor Ken Winters, speaking to Myrtle Beach online.
