European poker players 'driven by fun'

2007-02-09 15:58:56

A new survey of European poker players' habits has revealed that three quarters cited 'fun' as the simple motivating factor in their playing of the game.

The study, conducted by Jupiter Research market analysts, found that the average poker player is a young male with an income of under €35,000 a year.

Over 70 per cent of offline and online poker players in Europe are male, Jupiter Research claimed. Female players are more prominent in France and Germany, making up 34 and 31 per cent of the market respectively.

While the correlation between job and poker playing was not consistent across the continent, but the average player was found to play around four times a month, typically at evenings and weekends.

Over 20 per cent of players in the Netherlands and Germany considered themselves to be below average compared to the rest of Europe in terms of poker skills, but 11 per cent of Swedish players judged themselves to be superior.

The recent eCogra Global Online Gambling Survey also found that entertainment was the key factor, ahead of winning money, in gambling at online venues.
