The LA Poker Classic, which began this weekend at the city's Commerce Casino, has witnessed a surge in entrant numbers for the third year in a row.
The $10,000 buy-in event attracted 791 competitors this year, compared to 692 in 2006 and 538 in 2005, as players seek to secure the $2.4 million first prize.
With each of the final table competitors guaranteed at least $250,000, the prize pot ranks as the highest of any $10,000 event featured in World Poker Tour history.
The large field meant that a number of high-caliber players made early exits, including Daniel Negreanu, Evelyn Ng, Gus Hansen, Joe Hachem and John Gale.
Reigning World Series of Poker (WSOP) champion Jamie Gold was another who went out early on. Last week Gold announced that he regretted bending the rules at last year's WSOP tournament by twice revealing his cards to a fellow competitor, once accidentally and once to help a friend remain in the competition.
