Gambler takes home $2.4m from first ever tournament

2007-03-02 16:10:16

A player participating in his first ever poker tournament has walked away with the $2.4 million prize for first place, it has been revealed.

Eric Hershler won the LA Poker Classic following several days of intense competition, seeing off some of the world's biggest and best-known players in the process.

An initial field of 791 was eventually reduced to just two, as Hershler took on J C Tran for the highest ever World Poker Tour (WPT) prize for a $10,000 buy-in event.

Hershler began with the small stack, but a good run of cards and some clever play saw him gradually overtake Tran, before becoming an instant millionaire with two pair on the final hand.

"What a great fairy tale ending to the best and biggest tournament ever staged in Los Angeles. We are especially pleased that Eric Hershler, a local player, kept the title here in Los Angeles," said Tim Gustin, manager at Commerce Casino, which hosted the event.
