World Series of Poker officials have said that they are planning for 10,000 contestants to compete in this year's event, in what looks set to be a record-breaking tournament.
The figure represents a 14 per cent increase on last year's 8,773 entrants, and proves that poker is still going strong in the US despite the controversial gambling act that was passed last year.
However, tournament commissioner Jeffrey Pollack cautioned that the number did not represent a prediction.
"It is not either a target, a goal or a prediction. But again, you've got to plan for something. We're planning for a top level of 10, 000, but if there are more, we will figure it out," he commented.
Officials say that a separate structure will be built next to the Rio casino in Las Vegas so that the expected influx of players can be housed in both buildings.
Las Vegas casino founder Benny Binion is widely credited with conceiving of the WSOP series of tournaments, which was started by Tom Moore in 1969.
