A 40-year-old jeweller from New York has claimed the top prize at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) circuit event in Atlantic City following stiff competition from a little-known player.
Danny Yousefzadeh eventually saw off John McMahon after several hours of play and a heads-up confrontation that lasted another few hours, with play eventually ending after midnight.
Yousefzadeh had done well at the 2005 WSOP but with limited success since then was a surprise winner, with McMahon also easily exceeding expectations in his first ever poker tournament.
Yousefzadeh won a sizeable $488,828 prize for his first place finish, as well as the chance to improve on his 2005 placing via a seat at the 2007 WSOP.
McMahon, meanwhile, had to be content with a not-inconsiderable $268,858 as a reward for a maverick strategy that saw him make the occasional blind bet.
The title was secured when Yousefzadeh's pair of fours secured a full house, with McMahon's open-ended straight draw failing to come to fruition.
