Arizona senator Jon Kyl has unofficially responded to congressman Barney Frank's claim that the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) is "one of the stupidest laws ever passed".
UIGEA, which makes it illegal for financial institutions to process the transactions between gambling websites and people living in the US, was strongly criticized by congressman Frank according to the Financial Times, but now senator Kyl has launched a riposte.
Co-sponsor of the Act senator Kyl has written a letter to the president, which was also circulated throughout congress, warning "any progress made over the last several months may evaporate if immediate action is not taken to ensure strong and effective implementing regulations".
The letter emphasizes the protection of family values the act safeguards, pointing out the enforcement of the law was the responsibility of the executive branch of government.
UIGEA has been criticized for the way it was passed through congress attached to the Safe Port Act and the exemptions it gives to fantasy sports sites.
