A Swedish online poker firm has announced record profits on the back of a deal with the Swedish government, it has been revealed.
Svenska Spel revealed that its profits for 2006 totalled $685 million, thanks in part to its role as a government-owned and licensed firm that provides regulated online poker to the nation's gamblers, onlinecasino.org has reported.
The financial results bode well for CryptoLogic, the online software provider that recently announced a deal to provide software for government-owned casinos in Holland.
"It has really fulfilled its purpose of bringing home a big part of Sweden's unregulated poker playing to a responsible environment within the country's borders," stated Svenska Spel chief executive Jesper Karrbrink.
However, a recent EU ruling could soon see government online gambling monopolies opened up to the wider market.
Svenska Spel last week announced that it was to promote socially responsible gambling adverts as part of a new initiative.
