Smyth wins big in Dublin

2007-04-11 15:14:31

Marty Smyth romped home with £442,743 in poker winnings at the Irish Open last night, the Belfast Telegraph (BT) has reported.

Smyth emerged victorious from the field of 708 players who competed for four consecutive days.

It is the second big win in three months for Smyth, who bagged £51,000 in another tournament at Christmas.

Smyth told BT he was "delighted" at his victory and that the win had "surpassed all my expectations".

He felt that "there were a lot of good players who could easily have won".

Smyth put his eventual triumph down to the fact that he "just had a bit little bit more luck than the others."

Poker tournaments have become increasingly fashionable as a result of their recent television exposure and the central role played by the game in the James Bond film Casino Royale.

The internet is the training ground for many of today's winners.

Smyth admitted to BT that he has won and lost sums of up to £25,000 gaming online.
