Women only poker proves popular

2007-04-13 17:08:18

Poker's masculine image is being challenged by the rise of women-only poker groups.

The Sheboygan Press, in Wisconsin, has reported that a monthly Ladies Pink Poker night hosted by the local Gameboard centre has been pulling in female gamers.

The event is not just an opportunity to play cards, but also a time to relax and build friendships with other women.

Lynn Potyen, owner of the GameBoard, told the Sheboygan Press that "we get to have a night where we don't have to be professional, very intelligent, smart women, we can just have fun and let our hair down".

One player, Lauri Flegel, explained to the newspaper that "it's just about hanging out with the girls".

"There's not a lot of drama, just straight, clean fun," she said.

Some women, however, prefer to play with the boys.

Barbara Enright, for example, has won three World Series of Poker (WSOP) events so far and has even made it to the final table of the WSOP main event.
