World Poker Tour clashes with French authorities

2007-04-17 15:46:58

The WPT French stop in Paris will not be televised as the organizers were unable to negotiate successfully with French authorities.

The event, held at the 100 year-old Aviation club de France, will still go through but will not be televised like the previous stops in the tour.

The cancellation of the popular show marks a continuing uneasy relationship between France and cross-border gambling.

Earlier this year, the European Poker Tour's event at Deauville was cancelled after a last minute intervention by French authorities.

In a more publicized case, executives of Austrian online gambling site bwin were arrested last year for offering their services within French borders.

French legislation grants all gambling rights to two state-owned monopolies, PMU and la Francaise des Jeux.

It is an arrangement that has come under increasing pressure from the European Commission for it to be dissolved, as the Commission continues its investigation into gambling legislation in nine European countries with a view to liberalising the market.
