Johnny Chan plans online casino school

Poker legend Johnny Chan plans to team up with a casino school in Buffalo to teach poker courses over the internet, a local newspaper has reported.

Owner of ten World Series of Poker bracelets, and a member of the Poker Hall of Fame, Chan has greater media profile than most players thanks to his appearance in the 1998 movie Rounders.

Chan's company, Chan Poker, is now to license his name to the Casino Career Training Center in Buffalo to create Johnny Chan University.

The training center wants to capitalize on the bourgeoning world market for poker playing and teaching by offering internet poker classes taught through web cam.

Apart from his high profile, Chan's Asian ethnicity is also believed to be a strong selling point as some of the strongest markets for casinos are currently in Far East Asian territories such as Macau.

But it is thought the idea will clash with regulators from the State Education Department, who are unsure whether a skill that requires so much manual ability and training can be successfully taught over the internet.

And poker courses are already available online at Johnny Chan's own site, run by Denver-based entrepreneur Nick Koustas.
