El Matador wins at Bellagio

2007-04-30 17:02:23

Carlos Mortensen, otherwise known as El Matador, has won the World Poker Tour (WPT) championship event at the Bellagio casino in Las Vegas, seeing off over 600 other competitors and taking home a prize of almost $4 million.

The pot makes Mortensen the fourth highest money winner ever in terms of a single event, but El Matador had to do it the hard way after he began as very much the underdog during the heads up confrontation with Kirk Morrison.

At that point Morrison was ahead by seven million chips courtesy of his stack worth over $19 million, with Mortensen soon falling over $17 million behind.

However, the high stakes betting soon backfired on Morrison as his opponent was able to claim the title following a remarkable comeback.

Other players making up the final table included Paul Lee and Tim Phan. Last week World Poker Tour (WPT) signed a deal with software provider CryptoLogic regarding the provision of online gaming services.
