Japan to get new poker tournament

2007-05-01 17:04:01

Japan is to hold the first ever All-Japan Poker Championship as the game continues its expansion into new territories.

The All-Japan Poker Championship is to be held on June 2nd and June 3rd in Tokyo, though no big names have yet been confirmed.

However, with a prize that includes a seat at the 2007 World Series of Poker event as well as flights and accommodation in Las Vegas for the tournament, the title is likely to be eagerly contested by competitors.

Famous Japanese players include Yoshi Nakano, who won the first ever Intercontinental Poker Championship for Japan last year, beating Australia's Tony G to take home the $350,000 prize.

Meanwhile it was reported last month that Japanese authorities were considering legislation that would see the country allow development of a series of casinos by 2012.

The benchmark in the region has been set by Macau, which now takes more in gambling revenue per annum than Las Vegas itself.
