Golf following WSOP's lead

2007-05-03 16:52:17

The World Series of Poker (WSOP) has inspired a novel take on golf that is set to be played later this month, it has been revealed.

The World Series of Golf will incorporate a number of techniques more commonly associated with poker when it is held at the Primm Valley Golf Club in Las Vegas from May 13th to May 16th.

Antes and bets for each shot will be two of the features imported from poker, with $50,000 buy-ins and a $2 million prize for first place.

"There is a tremendous lure with this game, and I think it will spread quickly. The trick is to know when to play and when to fold. When there's so much money involved, that five foot putt for birdie gets a whole lot longer," said event director of rules and competition Tom Meeks, according to USA Today.

The World Series of Golf was the name originally given to a separate, more conventional tournament in the 1990s. The last winner before the tournament changed its name was David Duval in 1998.
