Unheralded Cory Carroll has come out on top at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) circuit event at Las Vegas' Caesar's Palace, it has been revealed.

Carroll fought off a field containing 335 other players, including more famous names such as Chris Ferguson, Scotty Nguyen and Jeff Madsen, to claim the $506,176 winner's cheque.

The three day event began with a flourish as intense play saw 260 players depart after just one day's worth of action, before Carroll saw off eight others on the final table to take home his prize and a seat at the WSOP Main Event this July.

Seasoned pros such as David Pham made it to the final table, which Carroll went into as chip leader, but were unable to catch their less well-known opponent.

"I stayed confident. I was crippled on the first day with a coin toss and down to 800 in chips. I won a second toss and never looked back," Carroll commented after the tournament.

The win takes Carroll's lifetime winnings up to $571,223, pushing him into the top 100 of Canada's All Time Money List for the first time.
