World Series of Poker (WSOP) organisers have announced that players finishing lower down the money list will receive a greater percentage of the overall prize pool than in 2006.
The scheme has been introduced in an effort to reward those who are often overlooked in favour of the headline-grabbing tournament winners, with the overall prize likely to be reduced as a result.
Under the new system, the 2006 main event winner's prize of $12 million would have been lowered to just over $10 million.
"We are increasing the return to players who, after hours or days of gruelling competition, are able to reach the money. Our goal is to keep more money circulating among more people in the poker community," revealed Howard Greenbaum, specialty gaming regional vice president at WSOP rights owner Harrah's.
"The new schedules are designed to increase the rewards to players who finish in the money but don't reach the final table," Mr Greenbaum added.
Specific prize money for the 2007 event will be revealed once the number of entrants is known. Last year Jamie Gold won the $12 million main event.
