With card fans set to enjoy six weeks of poker at the World Series in Las Vegas, ending with a 12-day no-limit Hold'em, a team of experts at a gambling website have issued some advice.
According to LaunchPoker.com, when players have five pool cards on the table at the end of a Texas Hold'em hand, they should resist the temptation to commit based on their hole cards.
In its tips column, the online firm said that even the best initial cards could be defeated by the so-called flop, turn and river.
"Great hole cards are useful, but not the be-all and end-all a lot of inexperienced players believe they are," it stated.
"Often they don't develop and other weaker sets do, leaving that awesome ace-king suited or pair of kings second best."
Players are urged to consider slowplaying or sandbagging, whereby he or she does not bet despite having a promising hand.
Although this means the pot is likely to be smaller, it does have the benefit of cutting down the chances of a heavy loss, LaunchPoker.com said.
The Texas Hold'em main event at the World Series starts on July 6th and the final table will be seated at noon on July 17th.
