2007-06-04 17:30:57

The World Series of Poker kicked off its new season in style, with 21 year-old Steve Billirakis becoming the youngest ever winner of a World Series of Poker gold bracelet.

Hailing from Chicago, Illinois, Billirakis was the man left standing after the three-day event saw him beat off the challenge of Greg Mueller, the former professional ice hockey player, on the tournament's final table.

At 21 years and 11 days, Billirakis' bracelet makes him the youngest winner by almost one month, displacing the record set last year by Jeff Madsen, according to Poker Player.

The man with the nickname MrSmokey1 won in excess of $535,000 at the end of the tournament, his prize coming from a pool of $2,119,700.

Mueller went into the final day's play in third on chips count after leading the field after day one, only to succumb to the young Billirakis, who made his name in the world of online poker.
