WSoP buzzing as whiz kid wins gold bracelet

2007-06-06 16:27:34

Steve Billirakis from Illinois has become the youngest winner of a gold bracelet in the history of World Series of Poker (WSoP).

Aged 21 and 11 days at the time of his victory, Mr Billirakis has beaten last year's record when Jeff Madsen, who was 21 years, one month and nine days at the time, won his gold bracelet.

The whiz kid was playing in a $5,000 World Champions Mixed Hold'em event, against a table of mixed online and face-to-face players when he survived the competition and scooped his jackpot.

Despite the intimidating company of such pros as Doyle Brunson, Phil Hellmuth and Johnny Chan, Mr Billirakis stuck to his guns and ended the game $500,000 richer.

Mr Billirakis has said he intends to play several more WSoP events over the next few weeks.

This means is in the running to take Mr Madsen's other title as well &ndash WSoP's youngest two-time winner.
