A 22-year-old poker champ from Canada who pocketed $481,000 has credited his win this weekend to luck and playing a "smart game".

Jason Warner, who beat 1,427 competitors at the three-day event, also won a coveted World Series of Poker (WSoP) gold bracelet and said his chances had rested on a crucial moment in the game, reports the Vancouver Sun.

This, he explained, was during the final table when the river card turned face up happened to be a five - and luckily for Warner, he had doubled his bet and managed to go on to victory.

"That was the crucial hand. If I didn't hit the five, I was going home," he remarked.

While the new champion said he plans to use some of his winnings for future poker tournaments, he plans to keep his job and put the remainder of the money towards a new house.

His victory at the WSoP event was in a six-handed no-limit hold'em category. The buy-in amount was $1,500 and it was the tournament's 12th game.
