The 2007 World Series of Poker (WSoP) attracted a record 54,288 total registrants, it has been announced.

And the $10,000 No-Limit Texas Hold'em World Championship main event, which closes the tournament, has attracted 6,358 players, which will make it the second-largest live poker tournament ever played.

"Poker is alive and well, and the 2007 WSoP has been a tremendous success," said Jeffrey Pollack, the commissioner of the event.

In total, this year's WSoP generated a total prize pool of $159,796,918, while the main event prize pool is $59,784,954.

The winner of the Hold'em event will receive $8.25 million and more than 600 players will win at least $20,320.

Last year's main event pulled in 8,773 entries, with winner Jamie Gold taking home $12 million.
