'Broke' poker champ wins thousands

2007-07-23 16:23:58

This weekend 31-year-old Rodney Davidson needed some luck - and he got it – by winning Australia's largest poker tournament.

Upon entering the tournament, Mr Davidson had A$250 to his name and his car was about to be repossessed.

But it all ended in roses as Mr Davidson emerged victorious at the Australian Poker League Event at Luna Park.

He won $A300,000 at the event.

Mr Davidson commented: "You never know what your next card is going to be. One minute you're up, the next minute you might come crashing down."

The lucky winner has said that he plans to invest his windfall in real estate.

Present at the event in Luna Park was the brand new face of the Australian Poker League, Shannon Noll.

The poker exhibition was watched by hundreds of eager fans, including the sporting legend Willie Mason.

Players from every corner of Australia travelled to be at the event, either as participants or spectators.

Approximately 2.1 per cent of Australians have a gambling problem, according to the Australian Productivity Commission.
