Poker requires some skill in addition to luck, a Danish court has heard, which could have positive ramifications for the gambling industry.
Accused of charges related to illegal gambling, the president of the Danish Poker Association Frederik Hostrup was acquitted this week after the judge ruled that the game counts as legitimate competition and not just the luck of getting good cards.
Mr Hostrup's lawyer said that poker was more than just a game of chance, as skill is required to hide a strategy even when dealt a poor hand.
"Poker has become a sport of the people," he continued. "There are between 200,000 and 300,000 Danes who play poker at least once a week and more than half a million who play on a regular basis."
Although the ruling may not directly affect gambling laws around the globe, it could be considered as an important step towards the full legalisation of online and land-based gaming.
