A US university student has won the first leg of the first-ever PokerStars Asia-Pacific Poker Tour in Manila.

Brett Parise, from Indiana, won almost $180,000 and a place in the grand final which is due to take place in December at the Star City Casino in Sydney, Australia.

The 22-year old is an economic and political science student at the University of California. He was the youngest player in the final nine.

Mr Parise has been playing poker for four years but said he is unlikely to turn it into a full-time profession.

"I'll finish my degree but I don't have any idea what I will do after that. I like poker but it won't be my life," he remarked.

According UK Poker News, the student-turned-poker champion only received his passport two hours before boarding the plane to Manilla.

The next leg of the tour is taking place between September 26th and 30th at the Paradise Seoul Casino in Seoul, South Korea.
